WEST VILLAGE APARTMENT

Also Office completed an extensive renovation of a 680-square-foot apartment in a late 19th-century warehouse building in New York City’s West Village. Originally constructed in 1898 and converted to residential use in the 1980s, the apartment had been subdivided with little regard for the building’s original spatial character, resulting in low ceilings and a compressed interior.

The design began with the removal of the dropped ceiling, revealing a hidden barrel-vaulted brick ceiling that was carefully repaired and finished with naturally pigmented plaster. In order to preserve the uninterrupted flow of the vault, full-height interior partitions were eliminated, and the plan was organized around three freestanding millwork volumes constructed in white oak. These elements define the entry, kitchen, dining, living, and sleeping areas while consolidating storage, circulation, and privacy within a compact footprint. Daylight from the apartment’s three north-facing windows reaches deep into the plan, creating a bright and cohesive interior.

Custom millwork integrates closets, shelving, a dedicated workspace, and pocket doors that enclose the bedroom when needed. One door features a stepped wood frame that precisely echoes the profile of the existing load-bearing brick wall, allowing the new work to interlock with the old. The result is a compact apartment that feels unexpectedly open, shaped by light, material, and a careful engagement with the existing building.
