Also Office was engaged by Pueblo Unido CDC, a non-profit developer dedicated to building sustainable communities in California’s rural Eastern Coachella Valley, to design multi-family residences in California’s rural Eastern Coachella Valley.
The St. Anthony Courtyard Apartments reflect a project-wide net zero approach to reducing energy use. The buildings are configured around two central courtyards that deliver naturally cooled air and indirect daylight deep into each unit, while careful consideration was given to building massing and orientation and climate-specific design features such as deep overhanging eaves, tall courtyards, and high R-value envelope design. All contribute to significantly reduced energy costs.
The development’s single story design and its ample outdoor space are distinguishing features which were informed through a process of community engagement with the tenants. Also Office also developed the masterplan which combines a variety of pedestrian-friendly and sustainable strategies, like bioswales planted with desert-tolerant native vegetation, and separated cycling paths. When completed, the development will exceed California energy standards, which are the highest in the country
